Community Resource Dog

Meet Murf

Murf, Community Resource Dog

The Hudson Police Department acquired our community resource dog, Murf, in March of 2022. We acquired MURF through a generous donation from the Murphy Family to support our efforts in community engagement. MURF is an English Cream Golden Retriever from GOFI Dog (Golden Opportunities for Independence).

To qualify as a CRD through GOFI, both the dog and the handler must pass rigorous testing and titling through the American Kennel Club, starting with their Puppy STAR and progressing through Canine Good Citizen (CGC), CGC Advanced and Urban, and finally passing GOFI’s own Public Access Test. The main objective of having a CRD is to bring communities together.

CRD’s are an exciting development in police work, providing a valuable resource to communities in need. With their extensive training and public access capabilities, they are well- suited to serve as trusted partners to law enforcement agencies and provide a valuable service to the public.

Police forge partnerships with people who live and work in the community. These partnerships can help develop trust and transparency, leading to more efficient and effective policing in a kinder and gentler way. Murf often spends time with kids in all grade levels. Murf has been the guest reader for multiple classes and he has been to classrooms where students have read books to him, helping build students confidence. Murf also spends time at the schools having 1-1 sessions for students and staff that need comforting and during times of crisis. Murf makes frequent visits to the Senior Center and the Artisan in Hudson where he gets lots of special attention.

MURF is now a celebrity in town and makes many special appearances. MURF has been an
incredible addition to the Hudson community, and we thank the Murphy Family for their
partnership with us on this important program.
